Antique Furniture By definition, an antique is an old collectable item. It is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility and other unique features. It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society. It is common practice to define "antique", as applying to objects of at least 100 years old. Antiques are usually objects which show some degree of craftsmanship, or a certain attention to design. Many collectors use the pieces in their homes, and also care for them with the hope that they will hold their value or possibly appreciate in value over time. This is in contrast to buying new furniture which will depreciate in value from the moment it is purchased. The most common woods are mahogany, oak, pine, walnut and rosewood. Many modern pieces of furniture often use laminate or wood veneer to cheaply achieve the same effect.
Chairs of Oxford have carefully selected a full range of pieces, all of which ooze quality and authenticity. Please contact us for full details on our current selection of stock.
Art Deco Furniture By definition, Art Deco, or deco, is an eclectic artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s and flourished internationally throughout the 1930s and into the World War II era. At its best, art deco represented elegance, glamour, functionality, and modernity. Art deco's linear symmetry was a distinct departure from the flowing asymmetrical organic curves of its predecessor style art nouveau; it embraced influences from many different styles of the early twentieth century and drew inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Aztec forms.
We love this era at Chairs of Oxford and are looking to grow our current stock to provide a full and varied range of items to suit all requirements. Please contact us for full details on our current selection of stock.
French Polishing French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface. French polishing consists of applying many thin coats of shellac dissolved in alcohol using a rubbing pad lubricated with oil. "French polish" is a process, not a material. The main material is shellac, although there are several other shellac-based finishes, not all of which class as French polishing. The finish is considered to be one of the most beautiful ways to finish highly figured wood. Using this technique, Chairs of Oxford are able to both restore old and tired looking wooden items such as tables and furniture, or simply fix damaged areas on the piece in question, restoring it back to its former glory.
